On My WayBack Home I Found These Folks.
An exhibition by Diego Santana Claudino
10—12 June 2022
I’m a filmmaker by trade. I travel the world shooting commercials for a living. I spend a lot of time on airplanes. Flight time for me is drawing time. A lot of the paintings in this show are based in some of these drawings. But more than the literal way back home, the title of this show refers to a more personal journey. A scavenge hunt of sorts, where I ram through my thoughts and dreams longing for a connection with a different creative pursuit: painting. A place I could call home.
In painting I found an autonomy rarely experienced in a film production. It’s just me, myself, my thoughts and now these folks. Characters I found on my way. Folks inspired by folklore, religion and by a dream-like state I often find myself in during theses voyages back home. Both the literal and the metaphorical one. Mystery and a sense of restlessness plays a big role in the construction of these images. Emotions I try to balance with a joyful colour pattern. Both sides of this coin are part of my personality and I find fascinating how they come through without any structured intentionality. Well… at least for me.
